Got bad experience in skiing? Take sandboarding! Warm and soft sand dunes is much more pleasant than cold and wet snow.
Liwa Oasis on the edge of Rub el-Khali Desert is surrounded by sand barkhans. When local Bedouins became fed up with 4WD desert safari, they came up with an idea of sandboarding.
Descending on a board down the sand dunes is a great alternative for those who didn't dare to go snowboarding. Experienced ones can take 300-meter barkhan - it is possible to accelerate up to 60 km/h.
How to do?
1. Liwa Oasis is situated 150 kilometers south from Abu Dhabi. The highest dune Tal Moreeb is 25 kilometers from Mezaira'a village.
2. Book an arranged sand dunes trip at your hotel in late afternoon. It takes about an hour to get to the place, 45 minutes to go sandboarding and one more hour to get back.
3. Beeswax your board to descend faster.
Where to do?
This place attracts travelers with a possibility to visit the Date Festival. Also the landscapes of Liwa oasis are so unusual that they create a sense of a true mirage.30
When to do?
Late autumn, winter or early spring is the best time to go sandboarding.
The price for 4-people group is 1000 dirhams. The trip includes sandboard rental, return 4WD transfer and sandboarding.
A helmet rental for Tal Moreeb descend is for extra pay.
