This is the main square of Madrid, the largest square in Spain and the place where the most beautiful buildings of the city are located.
Square of Spain, Madrid
Once there were the gardens right where the Plaza of Spain (Plaza de España) is located nowadays. Then Joseph Bonaparte organized the barracks for his army here, but they were soon taken down, and it was decided to refine the central part of the city and to make a square.

In the southern part of the Plaza of Spain there are a lot of shady trees under which you can hide from the heat or have a picnic. In the central part of the square you can find the famous monument to Cervantes and his two main characters - Don Quixote and Sancho Panza.

The Plaza of Spain is surrounded by several important buildings for Madrid - Madrid Tower (Torre de Madrid), one of the highest in Europe, the House of Gallardo (Casa Gallardo), a vivid example of the modernist architecture, and the Spain Building (Edificio España), where you can find a large shopping center.
