How to visit Warao people settlement in Maturin
Warao - "the boat people" - wandering people that live mainly in northeast Venezuela.

The name of the tribe comes from their way of living: warao build their houses just rigt on the bogs or rivers and travel by canoe. Warao eat fish and birds they catch.

How to do?

1. San Jose de Buja inhabited by Warao is placed 70 kilometers from Maturin. In the village there are a few shops, bar, first-aid post and also eco-lodges for tourists (with comfortable beds, shower and toilet).

2. You can book a motorboat excursion to Warao settlement. Departure time is about 8am from San Jose de Buja, the way takes 40 minutes. In jungles over the river if you're lucky you can see exotic birds - toucan, macaw, sun bittern and boatbill and also fresh-water dolphins and capuchin monkeys.

It is placed in east Venezuela and branches into 60 canals and 40 tributaries. The delta occupies 41 000-kilometer territory and is inhabited by Indians Warao. The way to here takes 2 hours by car from Maturin and then 1 hour by a motorboat.
