Take a look at these awkward fin-footed giants. Getting acquainted with them is one of the major reasons for going to Spitsbergen.
Visiting Norway is impossible without getting acquainted with the residents of this Arctic land. All you need to see a walrus rookery is just a bit of luck, the right time and the right place.
The best time to see the walruses is the end of May. The most popular place, where the fin-footed idlers are most likely to be found, is Prins Karls Forland.
Unfortunately, it is extremely difficult to get to these places by yourself. The only option is to use the services of travel agencies. A walrus safari will cost you an average of 200 EUR. But even this trip does not guarantee the 100% chance of getting the result. If the weather is not good enough and the sea is not calm, you won't disembark and will have to look at walruses from the deck only.
And, if you belong to the ones, whose luck is always in, then a closer acquaintance with the walruses will give you a bulk of impressions. After landing on the shore, you will see the rookeries of these animals. You can come up to them quite closely, but you have to stay against the wind lest a powerful gust throws you into the very middle of their idle crowd.
While you watch the walruses with curiosity, they will watch you with a similar surprise. And, if these mustached mellow creatures like you, the acquaintance may be considered a success.
