Become a witness of a breathtaking contest. The ancient tradition of buffalo race is one of the most emotional events in Thailand, too.
In Chonbury province, a spectacular annual event takes place, gathering excited crowds of spectators. The tradition of buffalo races started hundreds of years ago and it is still recognized as the most emotive and popular event in Thailand.
The Buffalo Race dates coincide with the end of the farming season. It is held at the end of October and lasts for several days. You can witness the amazing improvised contest, taking place in the square in front of the city government offices.
It is a remarkable fact that taking part in the Race is allowed only to the buffalos specially reared up for the contest by farmers.
Before the Race the owners dress the beasts up in bright outfits, paint intricate patterns on their heads with colored talc, adorn them with flower garlands and even apply some fragrance on their skin.
The contest starts: the riders take the buffalos by the horns and dash to the finish line at a speed of more than 60 kilometers per hour, hurrying up their "horny bolides" all the time. In addition to the Race, a buffalo beauty contest is held during the event. It is also a remarkable show participated by local pop stars.
